Compression is on the client side.

We haven't seen the logs from the server, so have no idea what is  
going on. You need to give us the server logs!

The version identifier is changed in the code in SVN, so it  
definitely won't work. This is deliberate, because the server needs  
to support extra commands, which will only be used if diffing takes a  
long time. So a weird one if anyone gets caught by it.
