I've managed to test this on Solaris 2.8 and this patch is not 
necessary. I think the problem stemmed from using static libraries.

NetBSD hacks are in now, so I think we're good to go.

If anyone can do a last minute checkout and test of trunk just to make 
sure the netbsd stuff hasn't added any clangers that'd be handy (seems 
ok on FC4).
