When is a question mark not a question mark? Does anyone know why the case 
'?' could be ignored (skipped over) in this case, to hit the select 
statement's default clause?

Tobias, please could you try the following:

Don't delete anything or run any other commands :-)

cd merge
svn update
cd bin/bbstored
make
cd ../../debug/test/bbackupd
../../bin/bbstored/bbstored -DVT testfiles/bbstored.conf

and send me the output?

This probably won't fix it, but the output should help to understand what 
on earth is going on here.
