As far as I know:

1. Ben, who wrote this code originally, prefers BSD to GNU in general;

2. I think GNU make is not always installed on OS X machines. Is it part 
of XCode?

3. BSD make has a better dependency mechanism that results in faster 
builds than GNU make on the same system.
