I've added the -E option to latest trunk to disable support for editline. 
I hope that Debian can be persuaded to release a build from the next 
release candidate.

After spending about 8 hours on it, I don't think that I know enough about 
libedit to implement the necessary changes for it to properly support 
international characters, without breaking backwards compatibility and 
probably introducing new bugs.
