My Case started with a broken HDD (I didn't get any file from it). After I installed Windows on a new HDD and Boxbackup (from onlinebackup.altimate.net - the gui for Box Backup I wrote a few years ago) i started restoring the files (to let it run over night) while bbackupd was stopped (so no files can be deleted on the server). I installed two programs (one for tax, one for invoices - the databases of these two programs are the most important files on this computer - and they are lost?!) => Windows installed updates and restarted. So bbackupd was started by the Boxbackup GUI and files were deleted from the Server (I didn't realize this at this point) => I think at this point, the database-files (empty files created by the setup) from the two programs were transferred to the server. I restarted restoring the files (while some were missing - which i didn't know) and copied them to the correct folders. => i think at this point, the two database files were changed on the filesystem and transferred to the server - again. A few days later, I realized that there was a mistake restoring the files and I tried to get them back using bbackupquery. But there are only the files I already got from the backup (the empty ones from the backup). -o and -d also shows only this version. Has anyone an idea, how to get something more from Box Backup than it shows? Please help me out of this... It's not going to be easy, or very likely to be successful I'm afraid. Box Backup isn't good at storing old/deleted versions, as the note on the front page points out. The work to improve that has not been done yet. Do you back up the backup server (bbstored)? Can you restore the store to an earlier state? Can you mount the bbstored store as read-only to prevent any further changes, and run "testdisk" on it to try to recover deleted files? Hopefully some of these files are Box Backup file objects. You won't be able to tell what's in them on the server, except that they are files, and the approximate size. If you can get the files back, AND they are not incremental but full backups, then we can decrypt them manually on the client and see what they contain. When I ran the make install-backup-client however, the script > fails: [snip error message and rest of mail] Hi Mike If the directories exist, do they have the correct permissions for the install script to write to? For what it's worth, six months ago I started a homebrew script. It still has some small errors, and I've never gotten around to fix them. But I have been running it on two machines successfully nonetheless. If you want to finish it, you'll find it by googling for "homebrew boxbackup" (without the quotes). Kind regards, Toby
