In my language lab, I have 3 stand-alone Dell Optiplex 210L desktop computers all running WIndows XP SP3. Each computer has Internet Access / Norton Internet Security. As you know, MicroSoft will no longer support Windows XP after April 8, 2014 ... and I'm looking for a functional full system backup & restore solution for a post April 8th era. My questions are: 1) Will "BoxBackup" give me the capability to backup my complete Hard Drive(including XP SP3 Operating System, all Windows & MicroSoft Office Updates) and at a later date do a full restore? Note: A clean re-install of the OS from my Dell provided Recovery CD's won't work because MS will no longer provide the necessary & important "Updates") 2) Can the backups be made to DVD-CD media? 3) Can the backup's be made to/or restored from my online DropBox Account? 4) In the event of a hard drive crash or drive replacement ... are these DVD-CD's bootable? 5) Does "BoxBackup" need to be installed and running on the target drive for a restore? Thank you! You need a "bare metal" backup & restore solution. Consider a product like Acronis True Image. I'm actually waiting for a call back from Mike at Acronis on the True Image Prem products. I've read 20+ reviews on the Acronis products and so hopefully Mike can explain these concerns. If you like, I'll keep you posted as to my decision and test results. You should use system imaging for that. However as you're probably aware, system imaging is slow and requires the machine to be shut down, so it can't provide you with continuous protection for your data as you create it. Box Backup is good at that. > 2) Can the backups be made to DVD-CD media? No. > 3) Can the backup's be made to/or restored from my online DropBox Account? No. Amazon S3 support is more likely to be added sooner. > 4) In the event of a hard drive crash or drive replacement ... are these DVD-CD's bootable? No. > 5) Does "BoxBackup" need to be installed and running on the target drive for a restore? Yes, at least bbackupquery.exe and the configuration files need to be available. You can have them on a pen drive or CD to make restore easier, but it's not a disaster recovery system.
